Health care reform solution

letter, Daily Local News, 8/31/09:
To help move health care reform legislation, I propose that Congress and President Obama support a plan that would provide a “public option,” but only for states that voluntarily participate. That way, states with Republican-led congressional leadership would simply not participate in the “public option” and could continue with the status quo.
Other states could participate as they wish. This way, everyone’s happy. Those of us supporting a public option would get it. Those who don’t, don’t.
Studies show that Democratic-led states (as, the Northeast) would be supporting citizens’ health care in the poorer (often southern) states in any public option plan.
If public-option participation is voluntary by state, those of us in Democratic-led states would not have to support the Republican-led states. They’d be on their own in their Republican market-driven utopias. A simple solution.
