Following in the footsteps of Rome?

Recently while visiting Rome, I stood in the ruins of the ancient Roman Forum. I was struck by what must have been the grandeur of a great civilization. In the early days, Rome was a republic. The leaders of the Roman Republic were wise and virtuous men who respected and valued citizens at all levels of society.
Citizens were recognized as Rome’s most important resource. The citizens of the republic were vibrant and engaged in the political system.
Later the rulers of the empire succeeded in abrogating the democratic laws, civil rights and liberal institutions of the Roman republic.
The emperors and nobility were often an arrogant and elitist bunch who aggrandized and enriched themselves at the expense of the middle and lower classes. The rich were favored while the welfare of the average Roman citizen was ignored. Read the rest of this entry »
